LeDroit Park
LeDroit Park is a neighborhood located just south of Howard University. As one of the first suburban communities of Washington, D.C., LeDroit Park was a gated community reserved for the city’s most elite residents. Victorian mansions and townhomes with landscaped lawns could be found along narrow, tree-lined streets – giving residents the impression of peace and serenity without leaving the proximity of Washington, D.C.
Bound by W Street to the north, Rhode Island and Florida avenues to the south, Second Street to the east, and Howard University Hospital to the west, LeDroit Park is still home to many of Washington’s leading figures. The community, which was desegregated after Howard University students protested its discriminating policies, has developed into a unique and diverse neighborhood.
